Title: Remote Access: More Than Just a VPN and a Prayer

Abstract and takeaways: Remote access is more than just logging in from your couch at 2 a.m. It includes web interfaces, SSH connections, and even Microsoft Management Console (MMC) tools that many people don’t think of as "remote."
After leading over 100 interviews, supporting TSA Security Directive 2 compliance efforts, and working as a sysadmin for an Owner/Operator, I’ve seen firsthand how the definition of remote access is often misunderstood — and why that creates risks most teams don’t realize they have.

Bio:
Elan Alvey is an Industrial Consultant at Dragos, where he supports network and vulnerability assessments for industrial environments.
He began his IT career in the U.S. Navy. He went on to support intelligence operations and infrastructure for the Air Force, the National Center for Credibility Assessment, and two US Navy threat-sharing platforms.
Before joining Dragos, Elan worked at Louisville Gas and Electric/Kentucky Utilities, focusing on NERC/CIP compliance and preparing Gas SCADA systems for TSA Security Directives 1 and 2.
Education: B.S. in IT Management and M.S. in Cybersecurity, both from Southern New Hampshire University.
